The company, established in 1980, is a division of Thailand's largest retail conglomerate, Central Group, which is owned by the Chirathivat family. In 2014, the company received a Royal Warrant of Appointment from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the first hotel company in Thailand to receive this honour.

Centara Hotels & Resorts has pursued not only an owned investment expansion strategy but also an asset-light expansion strategy through acquiring management contracts in Thailand and overseas. Currently, Centara Hotels & Resorts has more than 85 hotels in a portfolio both in operation and pipeline in 12 countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Maldives, Napal, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Northern Cyprus, Turkey, Myanmar and Japan.

In addition, the company runs a food business under its subsidiary company, Central Restaurant Group Co., Ltd. (CRG). CRG is one of the leaders in Thailand's chain restaurant industry, established in 1978 with the intention and vision to respond to Thai customers' daily needs with quality food products and excellent services. The company has a multi-brand portfolio that covers a great variety of food types with 1,414 outlets nationwide including in Vietnam under the joint Venture brand.
